Tubular Bells
Create music in our tubes! Hit the tubes and listen to the notes that are created. The atoms at the point of impact receive a blow that is sent onwards by the atoms knocking against neighbouring atoms. The vibration propagates through the tube.
Depending on the speed of sound in the wood and the length of the tube, certain notes will be more readily produced, and resonance arise. The vibrating wooden tube in turn transfers its oscillations to the surrounding air.
The vibrations of a shorter tube give a higher frequency oscillation, which is heard as a higher pitched note. When a longer tube is hit, the frequency will be lower and a lower-pitched note is heard.
